The Grand and The Pastoral

Nature has always been a great inspiration for composers. Vyšehrad is the first of a cycle of symphonic poems paying homage to the people and culture of Bedřich Smetana’s native Bohemia. Likewise, Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, the “Pastoral,” takes listeners on a journey through the Germany countryside, past a babbling brook, into a rainstorm, and ends with an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
