The Museum of Northwest Art presents an exhibition of photographic portraits of 20 Northwest artists by Eduardo Calderón, audio and transcribed interviews conducted by Calderón, and works by the artists, Jan. 12-March 13.
Beginning in 2010, Calderón interviewed a cross section of Northwest artists ranging in age, background, and mediums each uses to make art, and photographed the artists in their homes. Each artist was asked the same questions about influences, backgrounds, and what brought them… Show more to the Northwest (if the artist was not already a native). The artists were selected based on input from art professionals familiar with the region’s contemporary art and range from Kent-based painter Danny Pierce, who has been working in the region since the 1950s, to Seattle sculptor John Grade, who came back to Seattle in the early 1990s.
Through the recorded interviews, a picture of the Northwest emerges that captures generations of aspiring artists and the institutions, individuals, and groups that supported them. From informal salons of artists and writers to the various universities and schools in the region, we obtain a portrait of the Northwest’s cultural infrastructure, the layout of its arts scene, and the ways in which the arts evolved over time. Personal motivations are also shared in the interviews, and the corresponding black and white photographic portraits, taken in a domestic setting, reveal more about the private lives of the artists.
The 20 photographic portraits by Eduardo Calderón include Cris Bruch, Weldon Butler, Mark Calderon, Lauri Chambers, Scott Fife,
John Grade, Lauren Grossman, Robert C. Jones, Margie Livingston, Maxine Martell, Gene Gentry McMahon, Jeffry Mitchell, Danny Pierce, Mary Randlett, Ginny Ruffner, Akio Takamori, Whiting Tennis, Bill Whipple, Ed Wicklander, and Robert Yoder. Details: http://www.museumofnwart.org.
