After being rejected by Australia's prestigious National Institute for Dramatic Arts, joined a traveling theater company called the Woolly Jumpers. Made her big-screen debut with an acclaimed performance in the 1994 comedy Muriel's Wedding . Went topless to protest the opening of an Australian casino in 1997.  For her 2002 wedding to artist Andrew Taylor, asked guests to forgo gifts and instead make donations to the Sacred Heart Mission in St. Kilda, Australia.
