Bellingham National 2017 Juried Art Exhibition & Awards

Art Show, Museum
The Whatcom Museum is hosting the second Bellingham National Juried Art Exhibitions and Awards. Hundreds of artists from around the country submitted artworks in the theme of drawing to be considered for this exhibition. The top three artists will receive cash awards and the exhibition will include a popular choice award. The artwork selected will represent a variety of mediums interpreting the theme of drawing. Artwork will feature modern ideas of language, writing, notation, mapping, movement, dance, performance, as well as connections to space and architecture. Guest juried by Catharina Manchanda, Jon and Mary Shirley Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seattle Art Museum.

People of the Sea and Cedar: The Story of the Coast Salish Tribes

Museum, History/Science
Local and regional history of the Coast Salish people is one of the most requested topics by Whatcom Museum visitors. This summer, the Museum will debut a new exhibit in the second floor gallery of the Lightcatcher building that shares the history and art of the Coast Salish people, blending both historical and contemporary perspectives. This exhibit will feature artifacts from the Museum's collection, such as Coast Salish artwork and carvings, woven blankets, hand-made tools, and cedar hats, clothing, and baskets. The exhibit will provide hands-on learning experiences, a Lummi and Nooksack language interactive, and videos showcasing Lummi and Nooksack weavers and carvers. Themes of cultural knowledge, art and symbolism, lifestyles, and community will present the Coast Salish tribes as vibrant, living cultures who honor their past while building a cultural and economic future for their people.

Docent Tour: People of the Sea and Cedar

Learn more about our permanent exhibition, People of the Sea and Cedar: A Journey Through the History and Cultures of the Tribes of the Northwest Coast. Our docents are gifted guides eager to share their knowledge in informal, interactive, hour-long tours. The show brings 60 artists from across the region to show and sell their outstanding, unique handmade work in the Lightcatcher building of the Museum’s campus in Bellingham WA. Works of the highest quality will be on view in the categories of clothing, jewelry, glass, ceramics, wood, sculpture and mixed media. The Whatcom Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate, therefore it proudly uses as a model the Smithsonian Craft Show, the most prestigious event of its kind in the United States.

This fall, the Whatcom Museum will feature a selection of artwork on loan from the Tacoma Art Museum, featuring works of Western American Art. The Haub Family Collection of Western American Art is unrivaled in its scope, and contains artwork spanning from 1790 to today. The collection includes prominent nineteenth-century artists who shaped our views of Native Americans, mountain men, cowboys, and pristine American landscapes, including George Catlin, John Mix Stanley, Thomas Moran, and Frederic Remington. Art of the American West: Highlights from the Haub Family Collection at Tacoma Art Museum was organized by Tacoma Art Museum, Tacoma, Washington.
