Punch Brothers with Haley Henderickx

Americana/Roots, Acoustic, Bluegrass, Folk, Country
The Grammy-winning Punch Brothers consists of mandolinist Chris Thile, guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjoist Noam Pikelny, and violinist Gabe Witcher. The band's accolades include a Grammy for best folk album for their 2018 release All Ashore, and praise from national media.
In November of 2020, when the world felt so full of uncertainty, Punch Brothers did one thing that they could rely on: they stood in a circle, facing one another, and made music together. A weeklong recording session, after quarantining and little rehearsal outside of a few Zoom calls, had culminated in their new record, Hell on Church Street—a reimagining of Bluegrass great Tony Rice’s landmark album, Church Street Blues—out on Nonesuch in January 2022.

MBT Lookout Sessions: Kim Richey

Country
An Ohio native, Richey’s passion for music was sparked early on in her great aunt’s record shop. She took up the guitar in high school and college but it didn’t stick right away. After college, Richey worked in nature centers in Colorado and Ohio and traveled to Sweden and South America before landing in Bellingham, Washington, where she worked as a cook. Friends talked up Nashville and convinced Richey and her partner to load up their Ford F150 and head to Music City. In Nashville, Richey cooked at the famed Bluebird Café and gigged around town before meeting Luke Lewis and Keith Stegall. At their meeting she played one song, talked a lot, and got a record deal at the musical home of Billy Ray Cyrus and Shania Twain. Her music continues to have a rule-breaking style which sets her outside contemporary country’s bounds and that is fine by Richey. Through it all, Richey has worn her heart on her lyrical sleeve. “I started writing songs because of Joni Mitchell,” Richey confesses. “I loved being able to write songs because I was really super-shy. I couldn’t say things to people that I wanted to say. If I put it in a song, there was the deniability. If I ever got called on it, I could say, ‘Oh, heavens no, that’s just a song! I made that up.’”

MBT Lookout Sessions: Sarah Harmer

Folk
Are You Gone? – the first new album in a decade from Sarah Harmer – is a deeply personal and momentous collection of songs motivated by the beauty of life, the urgency of climate crisis, and the question of loss. The first song “New Low” is more than a return to music for the internationally celebrated singer-songwriter and activist: it is a definition of form, a call-for uprising in the face of global disaster, at the most critical moment for Harmer to raise her voice – one of the most distinctive in Canadian music. The vitality of “New Low,” its heedless pace, sharp guitars and exclamatory horns, bely the passage of time since Harmer’s last record, Oh Little Fire (2010). Nearly twenty years from the release of her debut, You Were Here (2000), Are You Gone brings a close to Harmer’s period of musical quietude with a rousing artistic statement, rich in detail and emotion, from the heart and for the spirit. The multi-award-winning platinum-selling musician’s long-anticipated sixth album will be released February 2020 on Arts & Crafts.
